Core Beliefs

Christian Scientists believe in one, infinite God who is All and all-good. They believe that God is not distant and unknowable, but that God is all-encompassing and always present, and that each individual is loved by God, cared for by Him, and made in God’s image—spiritual, not material.Christian Scientists believe in the Bible and in Christ Jesus as the Son of God, or promised Messiah. And they believe that Jesus’ teachings and healing work expressed scientific Christianity, or the application of the laws of God—laws which are still practical and provable today, by anyone, anywhere. Christian Scientists consider the Commandments, as well as Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, to be central to their lives and practice of Christianity.Above all, Christian Scientists believe in the saving, healing power of God’s love—that no one is beyond redemption, that no problem is too entrenched or overwhelming to be addressed and healed. In other words, Christian Scientists don’t believe that salvation occurs at some point in the future, but that the presence of God’s goodness can be experienced here and now—and by everyone. One of the best ways to learn more about Christian Science is to explore the Christian Science textbook,
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

Christian Science is the timeless application of God's healing, saving, spiritual laws as practiced by Jesus and the prophets who preceded him. This healing continues today. The church building is modelled on a second century AD Tuscan temple and has heritage protection. This excerpt is from "Swamp to City", a history of Palmerston North.

"A church of more recent origin is that of Christian Science. Several years ago an earnest group of Christian Science students commenced holding services in the home of one of their number in Palmerston North. Attendances grew and a room was hired in Nathan's building:, and then in Spooner's building, where services were held for a few years. In 1931 it was decided that the time was ripe to discuss church building, the congregation having grown to such an extent that a larger room was procured in Broadway. The idea of church building reached maturity when the much needed edifice was begun early in 1933, the opening services being held on Sunday, June 11, of that year. Erected entirely in reinforced concrete, in an Italian Renaissance Doric order design, and finished in a rough textured buff colour representing stone work, the church is of an unusual but very charming design, accommodation being provided for approximately 300. The pastor over all Christian Science churches is the Bible and the Christian Science textbook "Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science."

Footnote.
Christian Science neither seeks or needs celebrity endorsement. Christian Scientists are Christian Scientists by personal conviction and not by conversion. None the less the following is an intriguing insight. Here we have an example of how the world's foremost master of physics, late in life, began the journey to metaphysics.

"Few people today realize how much Albert Einstein studied Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, supported its conclusions, and admired its author, Mary Baker Eddy. Dr. Einstein was known to visit Christian Science churches and Reading Rooms in the New York and New Jersey areas. There have been numerous anecdotes and quotes preserved over the years from individuals who have had knowledge of, or contact with Dr. Einstein, in connection with Christian Science.
"...the librarian of the New York Reading Room which Dr. Einstein frequented, that upon his leaving the Reading Room one day he commented, 'You people don't know what you have in that book (meaning Science and Health).'"
"In an affidavit by Mary Spaulding, wife of the famous violinist Alfred Spaulding, was preserved a conversation she had with Albert Einstein in the New York City Reading Room on 42nd Street. Dr. Einstein's high regard for Science and Health is reflected in the following: 'Science and Health is beyond this generation's understanding. It is the pure science. And, to think that a woman knew this over eighty years ago!'"
"A [librarian] in the [Christian Science Reading Room] in Princeton, New Jersey told me that Dr. Einstein was one of the most frequent visitors to the Reading Room. He would come in and spend an hour or two just reading Science and Health. One day as he was leaving the Reading Room, he stopped at the librarian's desk, and said: 'If everyone realized what is in that book (meaning Science and Health), you would not have enough room anywhere to accommodate the people who would be clamoring for it.'" - Reminiscences of Elizabeth Earl Jones, from The Healer: The Healing Work of Mary Baker Eddy, p. 189.
